MDT arranges sale and lease-back for Odfjell

MDT has completed the structuring and arrangement of a sale and operating lease for Odfjell of Norway. The tanker MT Bow Sky (40,005 dwt / built 2005) was delivered to its new owner in November 2008. The ship will continue in the Odfjell Tankers Pool and will continue to be managed by Odfjell.

The vessel was sold by Odfjell for USD84.5 million, and a UK subsidiary of nabCapital, the institutional banking and capital markets division of National Australia Bank Limited has granted an 11-year operating lease to Odfjell. Odfjell has obtained a very competitive dayrate for the vessel by applying the revised UK cross border leasing rules. This is the first UK operating lease transaction carried out by the nabCapital banking group with a non-UK shipping company.

Odfjell had been working on ways of strengthening their group equity since the damaging Norwegian retroactive tax imposed last year. This process had been hindered by the impact of the global financial crises. However, the sale of MT Bow Sky will result in a net gain for Odfjell of USD32 million.

MDT's Darren Hawkins commented: "It was a credit to the determination of both Odfjell and nabCapital that we were able to close this transaction in very turbulent financial markets on attractive terms for both parties."
